Unit: Renter's Life
Hey, I’m Taylor Vogel and this is Now That I’m Not Your Teacher. Each week we’ll explore an aspect of adulting that you might have missed in school. Since I used to be a teacher, I’ll structure it in ways that are proven to help you retain information. But since I’m not your teacher anymore, I can approach it in a way that’s honest and sometimes inappropriate for a classroom.
In this week’s unit, we’re exploring Renter’s Life—making the most of it, being ready to move out on a dime, and embracing all of the life that can happen when you have the flexibility of renting your space.
In today’s episode, we’ll touch on the best tip I have for an easy move out and for enjoy your space the entire you’re time you’re renting: Keep. It. Clean.
I know, I know. This is annoying, and something you probably had to do as a chore when you were a kid. BUT there’s a real value in keeping your home clean that makes it a place you can LOVE to be! In yesterday’s episode, we discussed having a place for everything upon moving in. This is critical to keeping a space tidy. If things don’t have a home, they create clutter. Clutter means you won’t take time to clean.
And let me clarify—tidy and clean are different. A tidy space is the equivalent of “picking up your room.” It’s stuff managing, and you should work to develop habits of putting things away every time you touch them so this doesn’t become a big issue and mind block. But when I talk about clean, I’m talking about removing dust, getting rid of sticky surfaces (ew), and disinfecting. You know, preventing ants.
A lot of rental management companies require you to clean before you move out and will charge you a cleaning fee (that is EXORBANENT) if you don’t. I don’t know about you, but literally the last thing I want to do in the middle of a move is spend four or five hours deep cleaning my disgusting home. I know. I did this in my first two rentals. This is why it’s critical to prevent disgust.
Clean your space weekly to maximize enjoyment of your space, always be ready for friends to hang, and make moving out SO MUCH MORE PLEASANT. Now that I’ve adopted a weekly cleaning rhythm, I can spend less than half an hour cleaning upon move out. It also has become a source of pride for me to look at my kitchen and know that I’m not going to have critters cohabitating with me. You can’t charge cockroaches rent, or if you can, they never pay.
